Mbuna is an endemic fish species in Lake Malawi, Africa. To distinguish this fish, look at its vibrant color. Mbunas have the most striking color within the African Cichlid family. Unfortunately, Mbuna cichlids can be aggressive and territorial but live harmoniously if kept with suitable tank mates. Here I’ll pour all the recommendations for you.

Mbuna Cichlid can be tankmates with other cichlids like Powder Blue Cichlid or Jewel cichlids. However, it surely needs consideration. Jewel cichlids can sometimes be aggressive toward other cichlids. So, it depends on your cichlids. Indeed, both fish have similar aggressiveness, but many aquarists feel okay keeping them together in a tank.

I've seen some aquarists place Clown loaches and Mbunas in the same tank, and they have a great bond while not entirely becoming friends, although the characteristics are different. Mbuna tends to be aggressive, while clown loaches are typically calm. However, here are the tips: To prevent your Mbuna from bullying the clown loaches, feed them at the proper time.

Tropheus is also compatible with Mbunas. However, you must ensure the tank is big enough for Tropheus to swim around. My Mbuna cichlids and Tropheus live together in a tank, and I have zero issues with them being mixed.

Aulonocara and Mbuna cichlids can live together in a tank. This is especially true when they are both from Lake Malawi. All because they have the water chemistry. Both prefer hard water with a higher pH and can live in the same temperature range.

As mentioned above, Mbuna cichlids' best tankmates are other members of the same cichlid family. This is why Electric yellow cichlids can be excellent tankmates for Mbuna cichlids.

Next, I have the Haplochrohat, fish that are compatible with Cichlids. The reason is apparent. Both have the same aggression! For this reason, no fish will be bullied. Haplochromis and Mbunas can be kept together in a large aquarium.
